The Human Development Lab organized the second edition of the Workshop on Economics of Education at Valle Nevado, Chile between August 20th and 23rd, bringing together leading international experts in the field. The event was held at the Hotel Puerta del Sol, providing an ideal setting for both academic sessions and informal interactions among participants.

The participants included researchers and professors from some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Miguel Urquiola, Dean of Social Sciences at Columbia University, who gave the keynote lecture. More than 20 experts from Duke University, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Chicago, UC San Diego, the University of Oregon, Yale University, the World Bank, and the Caribbean and Latin American Development Bank (CAF) also presented their research.

The workshop not only allowed participants to discuss their research but also provided a relaxed environment that fostered enriching dialogues and the establishment of new professional connections. The combination of formal academic sessions with group activities contributed to the event’s success, highlighting the importance of such international gatherings for the advancement of global educational research.

The workshop covered research on crucial challenges of educational systems, including gender differences on educational trajectories and returns, socioeconomic inequality, optimal design of mechanisms to assign students to schools, and the relationship between education and crime.
